This could include medical systems, security and perhaps even the new YouTube. Mathematical analysis and modelling, logical reasoning, programming algorithms and working with concepts of programming languages are all important here, and so is collaboration. This is why, every half a year, you will work on a project with a group of fellow students, designing 'things' like an intelligent bot in a computer game.

You can put what you've learnt into practice immediately

Towards the end of pre-university education, I was pretty sure that I wanted to study at TU Delft. I liked the atmosphere on campus and TU Delft's reputation also appealed to me. I'd always been interested in physics and electronics, but after attending Student for a Day events in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, I knew for certain that I wanted to study Computer Science and Engineering.

I really like the way the theory is taught...
So you can put what you've learnt into practice immediately. I have no problem spending 40 hours a week on my degree programme.

I see the fact that you have so many different modules in the first year as an advantage. It enables you to become acquainted with the various specialist fields in computer science, such as algorithms and data structures, software development and computer graphics. In the second year, you can then go on to specialise in a specific field.

As from the second year, students who performed well in the first year have the additional opportunity of doing research in the Honours Programme. I'd really like to do that, next year. Research into quantum mechanics and computer science seems like a great challenge to me.

Computer Organisation and Algorithms and Data Structures were the modules I liked best.

I have always been very interested in computers and everything associated with them. I went back and forward between computer studies and electrical engineering for a long time. I eventually choose Computer Science and Engineering because I'm more interested in software than in hardware. Although Computer Science and Engineering does cover some hardware, it mainly focuses on data processing, software and algorithms. That's why it was the right choice of study for me.

The transition from secondary school to university was something I relished...
The courses are also much more interesting than at secondary school, which means I'm more motivated.

My favourite modules in the first year were Computer Organisation and Algorithms and Data Structures. Although the subject matter in these modules is totally different, I like them best because what you learn really helps you as a computer scientist.

I'm not yet entirely sure what I want to do in my career. I've been considering working as a software engineer at a major company or becoming a white hat hacker. Armed with my degree certificate, there will be plenty of career opportunities, so I'm not worrying about it too much yet.
