During the International Bachelor History, you will acquire a thorough understanding of how changes and continuities in the past influence our daily lives and you learn to explain the crucial connection between past en present.

You primarily look at modern history (from 1500 and onwards) through a social, cultural, political and economic lens. This means that you study history more thematically (e.g. the history of migration and citizenship) and less based on historical periods – as is usual in other history departments.

You will learn to answer questions such as: How do games like Call of Duty perpetuate myths about the war, but also how they influence our thinking about the past? Why did so many European countries become rich while African countries have remained poor? What is the influence of movies such as Schindler’s List and Inglorious Bastards on our historical thinking? And how is diversity within football teams partly due to the colonial past of the country?

afstudeerrichtingen

afstudeerrichting Social History

This theme focuses on the history of social processes and structures, as well as on daily life and ordinary people.

Once the historical study of social processes and structures, today social history also focuses on daily life and ordinary people. Family, gender, labour, crime, migration, ethnicity, technology and urban spaces are recurrent themes in this established historical discipline. In this focus area, we will concentrate on a broad array of socio-historical topics – from the history of generations to recent debates on the history of global inequality.

afstudeerrichting Economic History

This theme focuses on the history of economics.

Since the Industrial Revolution, economic growth has been substantially higher than population growth. Consequently, for most people, the existential fear that this year's crop will not last until the next, became irrelevant. Growth was so fast that, especially in the Western world, consumption, military expenditures and wars could reach levels never seen before. At the same time, the entire world was drawn into a global economic system; business internationalised and inequality between the rich North and the poor South grew. These topics are central to this focus area.

afstudeerrichting International Relations

This theme focuses on the history of international relations.

Traditionally, the approach to history has always been from the perspective of one nation-state; history of international relations implied diplomats and armies. However, apart from the history of diplomatic relations and power politics, the history of international relations also involves the history of multinational companies, supranational organisations like the UNO or EU, international movements like the youth movement of the 1960s, or 19th century migration from Europe to the USA to find a better future in a faraway country. In this focus area we try to understand and analyse history in such an international context.

afstudeerrichting Cultural History

This theme focuses on the changing meaning of material and immaterial culture.

In its broadest definition, 'culture' refers to the expressions of human life: stories, traditions, monuments, ruins, and other heritage, as well as films, TV series, websites, and apps. Cultural history studies the changing meaning of this material and immaterial culture. In this focus area, we study rituals and symbols of memory communities, diaries and letters, classical works of cultural history, and the history of cultural encounters in the globalising world.

honours-/excellence program History Honours Class

In the second year of the History bachelor programme, the Department offers a select group of students the opportunity to enrol in an Honours Class worth 15 credits.

The sessions organised within the context of the Honours Class are intended for a more in-depth treatment of subjects studied within the regular curriculum. In this programme, students make an intensive review and comparison of a number of selected texts and discuss their insights among themselves and with the lecturer. They round off these textual studies with a written assignment. The selected texts relate to the following three core components of the degree programme: theory, research and practice. Each block focuses on one of these three core components:

Block 2: Liberty and inequality
Block 3: State and Society
Block 4: Beyond State and Society

In the Honours Class, we will also go into how 'thinking about the relationship between state and society' has changed over time. Moreover, the students' intensive interaction with the underlying texts ensures that the programme is cohesive in substantive terms. As such, the Honours Class presents participants with a unique opportunity to gain a more profound understanding of the subject matter. This is only possible to a limited degree during regular lectures, which are attended by a relatively large number of students.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

In many respects, historians are highly valued in the labor market, particularly in the field of politics, education, journalism, business and government administration. Historians have extensive knowledge of the past, which enables them to identify current issues in global society. They are able to gather information rapidly, assess various digital and printed sources, and compose a coherent argument.
Their historical knowledge and skills are crucial in today's world, but they are also essential for you, as a historian, involved with, for instance, designing historical expositions, teaching, writing articles in newspapers.

The way history functions in society, plays a central role in the International Bachelor History. Therefore, significant attention is given to current problems and their historical background, in a globalising and digitalising world. Graduates are not only specialists, they are also professionals with a wide social and historical knowledge.
