This two-year research master is specially designed for academically talented and driven students, who have a nose for research in sociology, media studies, and arts and culture studies. The research master will train you to independently carry out high-quality research, at the same time giving you the chance to more clearly outline your own research interests, with the help of leading scholars in the field.
More than half of all research master alumni proceed to do a PhD programme after graduation. But the research master is also an excellent steppingstone to a career outside the university, such as in applied social research, cultural policy, and consultancy in the media sector or art world.

Once you graduate you will have:- In-depth knowledge of the main theoretical insights and current debates in the sociology of culture, media and the arts;
- a solid grasp of the latest research and state-of-the-art methods in the field;
- a practical understanding of how research creates knowledge in the social sciences;
- the ability to apply social-scientific knowledge and research skills in new or multidisciplinary settings.

This is an integral part of our programme because it offers our students the chance to broaden their academic horizon and get first-hand experience with the educational system and research environment of a foreign university. All teaching is carried out in English. We must be convinced that you have sufficient fluency in written and spoken English to cope with the course from the start. We ask you to provide evidence of your command of English. You should include your test scores, if available, in the relevant section of the application form.
You meet the English proficiency requirement if:
- you have a Dutch 'vwo' diploma and grade of 7 or higher in English;
- you hold an International Baccalaureate diploma including English Standard Level (A) or English Higher Level (A or B);
- you hold a European Baccalaureate diploma including English as 1st or 2nd language;
- You are a native speaker of English (i.e. a national of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the United States of America) and you have obtained a diploma of secondary education in English for at least 2,5 years in one of the above countries; or
- You have obtained your diploma of higher education in English (the entire programme) in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South-Africa, the UK or the USA.
- We usually deem the level of English (the entire programme) Bachelor programmes at West European or Scandinavian universities sufficient for exemption as well.
