The European Master in Sustainable Energy System Management (SESyM) focuses on the economics and business aspects of transition of the energy system. It provides the economic and management skills you need for employment in the Renewable Energy Industry, as well as real life business cases and projects. Completing this master gives you a systems- perspective in terms of sustainable energy challenges. You will be able to design, analyse and implement business cases and sustainable systems with a systemic and interdisciplinary approach, making you essential to the whole energy industry.

The programme has a clear international focus, not only because of the anticipated international student mix, but also because you are expected to follow
the programme at different locations in Europe. Gaining experience through real life business cases and projects in the renewable energy industry is another important characteristic of the programme.

Hanze UAS is a member of the European Renewable Energy Research Centres (EUREC). Hanze UAS initiated and developed the new MSc SESyM together with EUREC members the Universities of Pisa and Zaragoza.

The European dimension of the master's programme requires students to follow part of the programme in at least two different European countries.
The master's programme is divided into three semesters. In the first semester, students acquire a solid foundation in systems management at the Hanze UAS. In the second semester, they specialise in a chosen topic at a different university and at the end of the course, students complete a six-month research project.
The entire 16 months programme is run on a modular basis with credits awarded for passing each section and the successful completion of the project. A total of 90 ECTScredits (30 for each section of the course) are required with a satisfactory level of achievement in all the sections to obtain the Master of Science degree.

1e jaar During the first (core) semester you acquire a solid foundation in economics and business concepts of innovative energy project design and implementation. The core is only offered at Hanze UAS Groningen. The second semester focuses on System Innovation Management (Hanze UAS, the Netherlands), Sustainable Energy and ICT (Howest UAS, Belgium) or Sustainable Energy Management (University of Zaragoza, Spain). 2e jaar The third and last semester you will apply your knowledge and skills in a research project at a company or a research centre. Based on this research you will write your thesis under the supervision of a (core) professor, a professor of the specialisation and a professor from the project provider. At the end of the master's programme, you will present your results to an assessment committee, at a EUREC gathering in Brussels.

At completing this master's programme you will have a system's perspective in terms of sustainable energy challenges. You will be able to analyse, design, and implement business cases and sustainable energy systems with a systemic and interdisciplinary approach, making you a valuable asset to the whole energy industry.
The combination of technological, economic, legal, social and environmental challenges encountered within most modern energy projects makes business development during the energy transition a major interdisciplinary challenge. It requires professionals capable of working with experts from other disciplines, that understand the complexities of doing business. They must be capable of designing and modelling modern energy business plans, as well as assessing and implementing them as energy investment projects.

SESyM graduates are qualified for management positions in the sustainable energy industry. Graduates can be employed by energy companies, utility companies, system operators, renewable energy agencies, consultancies or electric distribution facilities. Potential jobs are: energy business plan developer, energy system capacity planner, energy analyst, sustainable energy entrepreneur.
