Why study Dutch Studies?
The historical, cultural and philosophical impact of the Netherlands and the Dutch language is internationally significant – but while virtually everyone can recognise a painting from Van Gogh, few can properly pronounce his name! Hence the unique Leiden bachelor in Dutch Studies: the only programme in the Netherlands for international students who wish to specialise in the Dutch language (and Dutch culture, history and society) at a high academic level.

You start the BA Dutch Studies at one of three levels: Programme A for those with no Dutch knowledge, Programme B if you have some knowledge, and Programme II for those with an advanced knowledge of Dutch. The programme offers international students a flexible route to academic-level Dutch fluency as well as broad and deep understanding of culture and history of the Netherlands.

The three-year Dutch Studies programme offers you the opportunity to focus intensely upon gaining academic-level Dutch language abilities while acquiring a broad education in Dutch culture, art, history, and society. As you live and study in the Netherlands, communicating with native speakers on a daily basis, you quickly gain fluency – not just in language, but in cultural nuances.
Do you want to follow a full academic programme? After obtaining your bachelor’s degree you can continue with a master’s programme. Your master’s diploma will increase your chances of finding a job or academic-level position.

After your BA in Dutch Studies, you will be highly fluent in Dutch and will be express your ideas in an outstanding way, both orally and in writing. Further you are an expert on Dutch culture and society, historic and contemporary, and thanks to your Leiden University education you have excellent critical thinking abilities. With these skills you can approach many different sectors and potential employers with confidence; or you may go further in your studies, taking on a Master or Research Master.
Upon graduation Leiden University Humanities alumni have exceptional career prospects. 71% find employment within 2 months of their graduation, 90% are employed within 6 months, and almost 100% have found work within a year of graduation.
The Bachelors in Dutch Studies programme prepares you to take on any job in which fluency in the Dutch language, and understanding of its cultural and societal nuances, is needed. Think of positions such as: A translator, teacher, interpreter, writer or editor. But your language skills can also be transferred to the sector you prefer – what about becoming a curator or an entrepreneur? With perfect Dutch, it’s all possible.
