By choosing Biomedical Research as your specialisation, you will be able to make a significant contribution to preventing and fighting diseases as a research analyst.
As a biomedical research analyst you contribute to new insights and progress in battling cancer, heart and blood vessel conditions, diabetes, asthma and chronic metabolic diseases. With the help of DNA and protein analyses you research the molecular causes of a disease in detail. With stem cell research you can work out a therapy. You will be using advanced tools and equipment, as well as bodily substances donated by patients, such as blood cells and antibodies, in your research. You will work in a laboratory of a university medical centre, at a pharmaceutical company or at a renowned research institute. Your ultimate goal is to contribute to preventing and/or treating serious diseases.

The specialisation in Human Diagnostics is all about making analyses and diagnoses.
Doctors often base their diagnoses on the results of a medical analysis. These medical analyses could be the results of your work! By specialising in Human Diagnostics, you learn how to perform analyses in a diagnostic laboratory. You can work in a hospital lab and trace certain substances present in blood, such as enzymes, hormones, vitamins and minerals. Apart from blood, you can also analyse other bodily fluids, such as urine. Local laboratories might ask you to research which micro-organism is responsible for a surge of infections in certain regions. All these analyses are vital and can help save lives. However, precision is key: an incorrect result can have fatal consequences. With this important and varied work you make an important contribution to the treatment of a patient, thereby forming a team with the doctors.

In our specialisation in Food Safety and Health, the effects of food on the human body are central.
Healthy food is vital for a healthy body, and as consumers, we are well aware of this. Luckily, food production companies follow suit and work hard to create healthy foods that also taste good. As this is not such an easy task, specialists with the necessary expertise are sorely needed. Becoming such an expert is only one step away: all you need to do is decide to specialise in Health and Food at VHL! With the specialist knowledge of healthy food, you can advise food production companies on the necessary properties of the food, monitor production processes and point out important factors such as the needs of specific target groups, e.g. the changes in taste of elderly people. As a graduate in Health and Food you can play an important role in the creation, production and promotion of healthy food.
