The BSc programme International Land and Water Management addresses these problems. Students combine knowledge of engineering, environmental and social sciences, study the roles of various stakeholders involved and design land and water management improvement plans. The consequences of interventions such as dams, terracing or irrigation systems on relevant stakeholders are examined in regions spanning the entire globe: from Thailand to Ethiopia and from Peru to the Netherlands.

Most of the time (20-25 contact hours a week), you will attend lectures or tutorials and work in groups. In a small group, students explore a specific subject by conducting literature research, interviewing people and discussing  topics with each other. Learning how to work effectively in a group prepares students for their future profession in which they will often work in teams. You are expected to prepare yourself for classes and group sessions by reading scientific publications.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Almost all graduates from the Bachelor’s programme go on to complete a Master’s, at Wageningen University or elsewhere. The majority of graduates will work as consultants or advisers on land and water management issues or as a project manager. They may work in the Netherlands (at consulting firms or other organisations), as well as abroad, as part of government projects, development aid or international organisations such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Policy officers also find employment in government institutions, including ministries, provincial authorities and district water boards. Other graduates continue doing research, either as a PhD candidate or in another position at a university or (international) research institute.
