In many cases, exploitation levels have bypassed the carrying capacity of these ecosystems leading to devastating effects on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

Do you want to learn about innovative and sustainable solutions to preserve marine biodiversity and its ecosystem functions? Are you going to tackle these issues, using an integrative approach to marine ecosystem management? Then this is the master’s for you.

instruction modes

This master is a two year programme (120 ECTS). The programme consists of courses, an internship and a master’s thesis. Together with your study advisor you will design a tailor made study programme that fits your interests and ambitions. 

The master has a variety of teaching methods: lectures, practical work, case work, group work, computer models, excursions, self study, thesis research, internship. You will be educated in small groups by passionate teachers and researchers

Learning outcomes:

- integrate knowledge of technological, physiological, ecological, economic and social aspects of the use of aquatic organisms and marine ecosystems;

- analyse critically the social and ecological dynamics of the utilisation of marine resources, and the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems;

- compare stakeholder views on socio-ecological aspects of marine ecosystems and aquatic production systems;

- assess the ethical and societal consequences of production of aquatic organisms and use of marine ecosystems, define dilemmas and design possible solutions;

- co-operate in an interdisciplinary and international team;

- communicate with specialists and non-specialists considering the nature of the target group;

- reflect upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning

Specialisation Aquaculture:

- design ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable production of fish and other marine organisms in a global perspective.

Specialization Marine Resources and Ecology:

- evaluate biodiversity, environmental quality and sustainability of marine ecosystems for the design of management of the marine environment.

Specialization Marine Governance:

- evaluate existing socio-economic arrangements in order to design strategies for the governance and management of sustainable marine ecosystems and aquatic resources.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Alumni of the MSc programme Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management have many job opportunities. National borders will not hold you back: everywhere you go in the Netherlands, throughout Europe or across the world, you will encounter graduates from this programme.

  • Expert: As an expert, you usually work in multidisciplinary teams for aquaculture and fisheries companies, feed producers, public aquaria in zoo’s or in ornamental fish production and husbandry.
  • Consultant or policy adviser: You can work for multilateral, national and regional governmental agencies or NGO’s (World Bank, FAO, ministries, provinces, water boards, WWF, the North Sea foundation etc.). Moreover, at private companies there is an increasing demand for production chain management (e.g. Aholt, Heiploeg).
  • Researcher: You could become a researcher at a university or a research institute.
  • Other: There are many other options like starting your own company, working in communication, education, etcetera.
