Het Honours Programme richt zich op persoonlijke en maatschappelijke ontwikkeling, leiderschap en ondernemerschap. Er is een Honours community waarin studenten van alle faculteiten de gelegenheid hebben om samen te werken aan projecten. Studenten, die in het eerste jaar van hun bachelor al hun vakken gehaald hebben (met voor alle onderdelen een 7 of hoger), worden uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan het Honours Programme.
Studenten met gemiddeld een 8 of hoger hebben directe toelating tot het programma, anderen moeten een motivatiebrief schrijven. De faculteit Elektrotechniek, Wiskunde en Informatica (EWI) biedt een Honours Programme van 20 studiepunten aan, waarvan 5 studiepunten uit het TU Delft brede programma en 15 facultaire studiepunten. Deze kun je invullen door een vrij onderzoeksproject, een onderzoeksproject voor een studentenproject (bijvoorbeeld Nuna of Formula Student) of door deelname aan internationale programmeerwedstrijden.
Je krijgt een apart Honours-certificaat bij je diploma als je het bachelorprogramma en het extra Honours Programme binnen drie jaar afrondt. www.honours.tudelft.nl

Mathematics is quite varied

When I was deciding what to study, all sorts of things seemed fun and interesting. I really loved mathematics and was good at it, so I was keen to go on in that direction. There are plenty of programmes that include a lot of maths. In those programmes, it was actually the maths aspect that really appealed to me, but I was unsure about a programme devoted entirely to maths...
In the first year, you have real mathematics modules, you learn how to program, you work in groups on a practical problem and take an elective from another degree programme where you can apply your maths.

It took some getting used to at the start, because the pace at TU Delft is much faster than at secondary school. Fortunately, you're not on your own. My fellow students actually helped me a lot, in providing extra help or working together on assignments.

One of the best things about my degree programme is that it opens up so many different opportunities. You learn to apply maths in various specialist fields, ranging from healthcare to finance. I've no idea exactly where I'll end up later, but there are plenty of choices available!

The degree programme is really challenging

I started choosing my degree programme at an early stage and soon realised I wanted to focus on something technical. I found out that it was the maths in each programme that interested me most. So I thought: “Why not just study maths?” I thought a lot about it. I mean, would maths on its own actually be fun? Fortunately, there are many different types of maths and lots to learn, which makes the programme extremely varied.

I've now almost completed my first year. I feel very much at home in Delft and enjoy the independence of living in student accommodation...
I found the pace difficult at first, because you learn something new every day. You start with the basics and build on that during the programme. The thing I liked best in the first year was programming, because it makes a nice change from the more theoretical courses.

I don't know what I'll do after this programme. I like the idea of working for the government later on or of getting a job in another country.

In Modelling you work in a group and apply the maths you've learnt to reality

I found it really difficult choosing a degree programme. At school, my favourite subject was maths, but I was best at chemistry. This meant that for ages I couldn't choose between the two programmes. Eventually, I opted for maths because I think it gives you all kinds of different options later on. I definitely don't regret my choice now.

It takes a while to get used to the pace for first few weeks. Everything is much faster than at secondary school and you're expected to work more independently...
You also do Modelling. This subject involves being given a problem that we have to solve using mathematical models. What makes this course such fun is that you work in a group and can apply the maths you've learnt to reality.

The Analysis 1 course was even more enjoyable. It builds on what you learnt at secondary school and, for example, involves learning how to differentiate and integrate difficult functions. You do the same in Analysis 2, but with the help of vectors and matrices.

After graduating, I like the idea of becoming a consultant. I'd also like to do something involving optimisation or to get into the world of finance.
