Data of various kinds, such as the enormous data collections on the Internet, has become omnipresent in virtually all aspects of our society. Digital data has become the key to innovations in both social and scientific domains ranging from energy, economy, health and climate to bioinformatics and web science.

In the Data Science and Technology track of the Computer Science MSc programme, you will learn how to engineer and develop systems capable of processing and interpreting massive data sets to extract important information. Fundamental and practical issues of the analysis of data will be addressed, including e.g. security of data and software, visualization of information, decision making from data, and high performance computing algorithms.

specialisatie 4TU Cyber Security

Cyber security is a multidisciplinary field with computer science at its core.

For example, it involves cryptography, formal methods, secure software engineering, and machine learning. It also touches on a broad range of supporting disciplines, such as law, economics, criminology, management, and psychology.

specialisatie Information Architecture

The IA programme combines aspects from computer science and from management, and thus addresses the problem of concurrently designing and engineering enterprises and their supporting ICT applications.

My first thought of the TU campus, upon arrival, was 'wow, these buildings are impressive!'

After completing my bachelor's degree in Milan, Italy, I decided to continue my studies in the Netherlands. I chose to study at TU Delft because the university is well known and I chose DST specifically, as the programme was aiming exactly at my interests: Data and AI. The courses offered seemed to be challenging and extremely specific, which was exactly what I was after...
One of the seminars that I really enjoyed was 'Selected Topics in Multimedia Analysis' as it was my first seminar where the lectures given were made by us, the students, using topics and research that interested us the most.

Overall, I'm glad I made the decision to join this master's programme. The opportunities and the challenges opened were beyond my expectations. Now that I have graduated, I would like to keep working at the University on one of the many research projects. There are so many questions left unanswered!

For my graduation project, I worked on visualising gene expression in the human brain.

I am a Computer Science student at TU Delft. After finishing secondary school I chose to study computer science (Technische Informatica) at TU Delft. I enjoyed using the computer and playing games, but had no idea how a computer was able to do these things and I wanted to find that out.

After completing my Bachelor I chose to stay in Delft to do my master. It allowed me to continue my social activities at the student rowing club, but also because the university's programme offered a diverse and engaging set of courses...
For my graduation project, I worked on visualising gene expression in the human brain. This was a real challenge, because not only did it concern a huge dataset but I also had almost no knowledge of genomics or the brain in general. In order to make a good visualisation I had to gain a deep understanding of the data and had to figure out how specialists use this data to gain new insights.

The Computer Science Master's programme offers many challenges, often in the form of interesting and engaging projects. Getting your hands dirty on real assignments is the best way to master computer science and this programme gives you many opportunities to do so!"

Moreover, almost all the courses involve project work which entrenches our understanding of various theoretical concepts via application in practical problems.

My bachelor is in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, however I liked coding and mathematics better. Furthermore, I preferred statistical analysis and image processing from my curriculum more than the core electrical engineering topics. Hence a master in Computer Science was a natural choice for me. I was eager to learn about the fundamentals of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Getting an admit from TU Delft in the Data Science and Technology track provided me with the opportunity of realizing my goals...
The professors with their lectures make sure that we develop a profound interest in the subjects. Moreover, almost all the courses involve project work which entrenches our understanding of various theoretical concepts via application in practical problems. After spending a semester here, two courses that are my favourites are Data Visualization and Pattern Recognition. These two courses are almost indispensable when it comes to data analysis, my specialization, and I developed many new skillsets following these two courses.

For students who are looking to change their stream/field of study, TU is very lenient on it as long as students provide the right kind of motivation behind their decision. I plan to pursue a PhD in Social Web Analytics followed by a career in academics once I finish my masters. Delft is a very quaint city with a multicultural atmosphere, both in and outside the university, that provides the perfect learning environment for all its students.

Within my research, I develop novel algorithms to analyse such data, by making use of machine learning methodologies, or graph-based algorithms.

I am professor in Bioinformatics and I am fascinated by the interplay between computer science and life sciences. With the ability to decipher genomes, the role of computations is revolutionizing life science. This science of the 21th century will play a crucial role in solving the great challenges that humanity is facing. Already, important breakthroughs have been realized in understanding diseases, improvements in food production, or production of complex chemicals...
To do so, my lab has an excellent computing infrastructure with ultra-fast connections to the (inter)national high-performance computing environment.

Our bioinformatics students work in inter-disciplinary teams. For example, a recent student closely collaborated with clinical geneticists. He developed new computational tools to detect trisonomies (three copies of a chromosome instead of two) in unborn children by testing maternal blood. The results are now being implemented as part of a novel and much safer screening technology for pregnant women.

Because of their strong technical background, and their ability to cooperate in complex settings, our students are very popular in the job market. The shortage of bioinformaticians makes them most welcome in research and industrial positions both in and outside the Netherlands. Come and join us in our endeavour of this new thrilling science!
