Telecommunications and remote sensing systems form an integral and essential part of modern society for high speed distribution of fast increasing vast amounts of data and for the collecting essential

New amenities like the internet, smartphones and digital TV have become available in a very short period of time. Nowadays, it is easy for anyone to exchange any type of information by wired and wireless media at any time and any place. The rise of social media has a significant impact on the bandwidth needed. Safeguarding security and privacy are important social themes, while consumers are asking for smaller and more energy-efficient devices.

Telecommunication engineers develop and manage transmission systems, protocols, networks and services for short-range applications like Wifi and RFID, but also for future mobile and optical fibre networks covering the whole world. Another domain of this master is that of extremely high frequency (microwave and THz) applications and observation systems, including radar and remote sensing technologies for such varied tasks as safety scanners, weather forecasting and inspection of crops.

Personally, I very much enjoyed the courses in the High Voltage Lab because this is such an impressive building and its quite unique that students are allowed to use it.

I am very interested in the world of electricity and the electrical network and that's why I decided to do a Master's programme in Electrical Power Engineering. I moved to the Netherlands two years ago, after I finished my Bachelor's degree in Paris. I was eager to study at TU Delft as the university is known to be one of the best technical universities in Europe.

The MSc track Electrical Power Engineering exceeded my expectations since I really enjoyed the possibility to orientate myself in so many directions...
Therefore, my advice for new students of the EPE track would be: take a look at all the available courses that are given beforehand, to make sure you don't miss out on a course that could have been very interesting for you.

Personally, I very much enjoyed the courses in the High Voltage Lab because this is such an impressive building and its quite unique that students are allowed to use it. I would really recommend this MSc track to other students, as the career opportunities are extensive. Recently, I started a traineeship at Alliander, a large Dutch energy network company. I feel in control of my own career and future and my personal development opportunities are close to endless. I am truly enjoying it!

You can actually produce your own microelectronic devices in the cleanrooms

The advances that electronics have made throughout the years are amazing; being a part of it is truly a privilege.

My name is Miki Trifunovic and I chose the Master track Microelectronics. It is the design, fabrication and testing of small scale electronics. Within Microelectronics there is a large range of directions that you could follow: from analog to digital and from the component technology to high-level system design...
In this way, I have chosen two directions: Technology, and Microsystem Design.

Delft University of Technology has a great reputation and has a high quality education system. As a Microelectronics student, there is an additional advantage: you can actually produce your own microelectronic devices in the cleanrooms. All this have left me without a doubt that I made the right choice.

Being interested in a very broad range of aspects in this field, I wanted to proceed in a direction that would not limit my broad view.

After finishing the Electrical Engineering (EE) Bachelor at TU Delft, my enthusiasm for EE was even bigger than when I started. Being interested in a very broad range of aspects in this field, I wanted to proceed in a direction that would not limit my broad view. During orientation about Master programs, I noticed that the new track Signals and Systems offered a relatively wide range of course topics.

Signal processing has always been an integral part of all fields in EE and this track also seemed to satisfy my great interest in control engineering...
The program also offers enough space to go abroad for an interested internship.

I have never regretted choosing Signals and Systems and my motivation has even grown significantly after starting this MSc track. I couldn't have made a better choice!

The most appealing aspect about this program is the freedom and flexibility offered.

I joined the MSc Telecommunications program in TU Delft as I wanted to gain deeper knowledge in the area of wireless communications and networking. The most appealing aspect about this program is the freedom and flexibility offered. The MSc Telecommunications track provides broad array of interesting courses to choose from. The curriculum is of high standard and quite intensive.

Professors are more than happy to answer our questions and are open to suggestions from students on the course organization...

If I have to give some advice to the prospective students, I would say: find your passion and concentrate on it

When I was a child, I was always curious about the world inside a chip, and always wanted to know why a tiny piece of semiconductor can become so powerful. To dig into this, I chose Microelectronics as my major in my bachelor program in China. Before finishing my bachelor program, I told one professor who I admired a lot that I planned to continue my study in Microelectronics in Europe, and asked him which European university he recommended. He said TU Delft immediately. Therefore, I chose TU Delft for my master study. Of course, my master major was still Microelectronic...
Although a lot of knowledge in class was already taught in my bachelor program, I really enjoyed those lectures, especially the way the lecturers explained the knowledge. In the second year of my master program, I conducted my master thesis in the campus. After working on my thesis for a few months, I was asked to switch my subject from the one I was interested in to another one I was less interested in. That was a pity. Thanks to my daily supervisor, I still learnt a lot from the topic I was less interested in.

After I got my master degree from TU Delft, I didn't start work immediately. Instead, I took a few months' gap to travel around and to think about my future plan. Thanks to the education I got from TU Delft as well as from the other schools I attended before, I got three options for my first job. These three working opportunities were from three different countries: the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Although the Netherlands is a lovely country, I went to Germany because I would like to experience the life in different countries. I work as a researcher on integrated mixed-signal circuit design in the institute of Microelectronics in a German university; once I complete my project, I will be granted a PhD degree.

It has been more than one year since I graduated from TU Delft. I still miss the unique atmosphere there. And I always highly appreciate that the education I got from TU Delft well prepares me for my career. I would choose TU Delft again if I were given a second chance to choose my master programme university.

I don't have a lot of working experience yet, but if I have to give some advice to the prospective students, I would say: find your passion and concentrate on it.

Never be afraid to change jobs or employers, but also never hesitate to look for and create new opportunities in your existing environment. It is the fun and challenges that count, wherever they are.

I am Hans Elferink. I spent five memorable years in Delft, studying Electrotechnical Engineering (as it was then called) between 1972 and 1977. Computers were huge noisy machines that swallowed punched cards and talked back via black screens with green dots. Professors did not have first names (or at least, no one dared using them) and annual university fee was about € 100.

After I graduated, I spent a year and a half as an officer at the Royal Netherlands Airforce. A great time which enabled me to see how I could deploy my newly learnt skills...
Over the years, the parent corporation of the company I worked for changed several times, always bringing new and challenging environments. We are now part of the international Thales Group, headquartered in Paris, France with a workforce in the Netherlands of some 2,000 of which about 50% is educated at Masters level. The division I work for, supplies professional electronic communications and security systems.

On paper, I am still with my first employer. Actually, that employer has constantly been evolving, changing, growing, shrinking, developing, entering new markets …. which brought me great opportunities (some of which I created myself). I traveled the world, co-operated with interesting companies and met with many inspiring colleagues.

My own role moved away from technology into the commercial world and middle management: Sales Support Engineer, Bid Manager, Business Developer, Marketing & Sales Manager, Capture Leader. These last years, I acted as Manager Contracts, Export Control and Configuration Management. In addition, and a well meant recommendation to all, I held many 'auxiliary jobs' like chairman of the Works Council ('Ondernemingsraad'), Business Ethics trainer, author of the company's Continuity Plan ('what to do when the company burns down?') and co‑director of a company promotion movie.

Never be afraid to change jobs or employers, but also never hesitate to look for and create new opportunities in your existing environment. It is the fun and challenges that count, wherever they are.

The advice I would give prospective students is to invest in their initial skills and dreams

Having a talent for beta sciences, I was prone to enter Delft University in September 1969. The first step on the moon in July 1969 was the culmination of what mankind could do with the help of IT, and for me strengthened my choice.

The cross-correlation between electronics and mathematics and the obligatory business economics program during the second year, formed the basis for my successful career in international business consulting...
All with great joy and excitement.

The advice I would give prospective students is to invest in their initial skills and dreams. Make no compromises for whatever materialistic benefits, especially during the start of your career.
