A transition to a society based Sustainable Energy is necessary to be self-sufficient, meet the growing global demand for energy, and address the threat of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. This transition will require fundamental innovations affecting the world's energy landscape.

Securing a sustainable energy future implies an energy transition that will require a new generation of dedicated engineers and researchers capable of developing, optimising, and integrating sustainable energy sources including solar power, wind power, and energy from biomass. Because of the intermittency of these sources storage of energy is an important factor for success. This requires innovative batteries and research into hydrogen as an energy source. New technologies need to be integrated into existing power networks and market structures. The design of new forms of energy distribution, energy market structures, and smart grids is necessary to satisfy the energy needs of modern societies.

The environment has always interested me. Renewable energy is very important for our future.

I am from Vietnam and I did my Bachelor study in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Kyushu University in Japan. I really wanted to continue my studies in Sustainable Energy. Looking at university rankings and scholarship possibilities, I became interested in studying at the TU Delft. Before I came to Delft I followed the Solar Energy Course by Arno Smets on edX to get an impression...
You can then make the most suitable choice for your thesis topic based on your background and interests. We also have a very international student population. This really contributes to the experience, because you hear about the energy situation in many countries. The professors respond well to our questions and feedback. They really are world class and it's inspiring how they share their knowledge and care about our learning.

You are never limited in this program, and as Energy is everywhere, so are your electives on campus

I did my bachelor in Mechanical Engineering at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. I then went on to work in the Oil industry in Saudi Arabia. I was really fascinated by the Energy field, but I wanted a career away from Oil and Gas, and therefore I started to search for master programmes abroad. Delft was the first choice with the TU's reputation and how extensive the MSc in Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) seemed...
I would really advise students to take electives in other faculties. You get a total new point of view on integrating renewable technologies, and it gives you the potential to see how much you have learned about energy when you see yourself sitting among students from other faculties listening to your input. The campus life is also so rich, and even more in the case of SET; it is one of the most international programs on campus, and our newly formed student association is super active socially, academically, and professionally.

Not only it gave me an overview of the several sustainable energy sources and technologies, it also provided me with the flexibility to choose the courses I wanted and focus on the profiles I found most interesting.

After completing my Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in Lebanon and having worked for a couple of years, I decided to travel abroad to pursue a Master's Degree. I chose TU Delft because of its high ranking and reputation for being one of the best technical universities in the world, and for having a highly international community. The Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) MSc programme proved to be great...
This gave me the opportunity to work with other students from different academic and cultural backgrounds. One other important aspect in the program, and the university, is the abundance of opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as being in a study association, a sports team, a helping as a teaching assistant, etc.

Moreover, living in Delft has been a very pleasant experience. This charming little city quickly became my second home. It is also very close to two big cities, the Hague and Rotterdam, making it easy to go on city trips during weekends!

I got to learn about the technical, societal and economical aspect of these technologies.

After finishing my studies in Seville where I specialised in energy at my Bachelor's in Industrial Technology Engineering, I decided that I wanted to continue my studies in renewable energy. TU Delft was my first choice since, apart from being one of the best technical universities of Europe, it offered the MSc in Sustainable Energy Technology. The programme was structured in such a way that I could dive into diverse renewable energy technologies. I got to learn about the technical, societal and economical aspect of these technologies...
One of my favourite courses was the System Integration Project, together with my team, we modelled, integrated and controlled several energy sources and storage in the grid in order to supply energy to a particular community.

Another advantage that the programme offers is that there is a long list of courses to choose from. This is very positive because it allows you to build your own programme, however I would advise the future students to think in advance about the electives that fit their interests better.

Almost having finished SET, I can say that I was more than happy with having chosen TU Delft and SET in particular. I enjoyed both, participating in numerous extracurricular activities that the university offers as well as becoming deeply knowledgeable about the energy transition.

Renewable energy sources and energy efficiency are the key components of sustainable energy

Renewable energy sources and energy efficiency are the key components of sustainable energy. The transition towards a sustainable energy system is a major societal challenge needed to preserve Earth for future generations. The deployment of sustainable energy, like wind, solar, and biomass is rapidly growing in many parts of the world. Improving energy efficiency is high on the agendas of governments and industries. The transition to sustainable energy on a large scale requires system integration and the design of intelligent electricity grids...
Our Sustainable Energy Technologies students get the opportunity to obtain a broad knowledge of this exciting field.

My own field of research is solar energy and I like to stimulate our Sustainable Energy Technology students to look for a topic of their thesis that combines their knowledge of different fields. My thesis students work for example on new photovoltaic materials and device concepts, the use of photovoltaics for electrical vehicles and planes, and the innovative integration of photovoltaics in the built environment. Another example is the use of photovoltaics in technologies that convert water and carbon dioxide into fuels like hydrogen or syngas. TU Delft offers excellent experts, excellent research facilities for Wind, Solar, Biomass, Power, and Storage and an excellent network with industry. The Economics profile helps students to get a good feel for innovation and market opportunities for these technologies. Some former SET students have started a company after their graduation. For the best students the university offers to stay on as a PhD candidate.
