We teach you long-term, higher management thinking and strategy skills that come with understanding the “why” behind motivations, consumption, cultural movements, taste, and more. Arts, Culture and Society gives you the tools to transform opinions into facts, ideas into research, test policies, and understand the social environment through evidence rather than anecdote.

Arts, Culture and Society offers a unique approach that integrates present-day modes of production, distribution and consumption of arts and culture beyond and across national cultural boundaries. Study the business of art Do you want to become a changemaker in the cultural and creative industries?Then the master specialisation Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship is the programme for you.

During the master specialisation Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship, you will focus on challenges the cultural and creative industries face today and in the near future. A special attention is given to digitisation, diversity, innovation, and sustainability - from financial to environmental, social and cultural.

You will acquire the knowledge and skills to identify, frame and address these challenges using a systemic approach and international perspective.

This international perspective is strengthened by the international study environment. Staff and students come from all over the world. This international environment provides a stimulating peer-learning and an exciting world-wide perspective on the cultural and creative industries.

Do you want to explore the world through the study of tourism? Then the master specialisation Tourism, Culture and Society at Erasmus University Rotterdam is the programme for you!

What makes a city or region attractive to visit? What role do media play in tourism industries? And how do people experience local culture and heritage? These are just some examples of questions that you will learn to answer during this master specialisation. Join our programme and become a specialist in tourism. We provide you with the knowledge and skills to anticipate and understand the global dynamics between societies, cultures, and tourism.

Tourism has grown into one of the most important industries in today's world economy. The field has become more and more diverse, because of globalisation and digitalisation. This calls for new professionals who possess the knowledge and skills to anticipate and understand the global dynamics between societies, cultures, and tourism.

As a Tourism, Culture and Society student you will study tourism from a multi-disciplinary perspective based on a combination of sociology, cultural studies, heritage and media studies. You will learn to find creative solutions and think constructively about developments within the tourism industry. This interdisciplinary approach makes Tourism, Culture and Society stand out.

At least a bachelor degree from a recognised Dutch university programme with a good overall result, or an equivalent qualification from an international institution.

You meet the English proficiency requirement if:

  • you have a Dutch 'vwo' grade of 7 or higher in English;
  • you hold an International Baccalaureate diploma including English Standard Level (A) or English Higher Level (A or B);
  • you hold a European Baccalaureate diploma including English as 1st or 2nd language;
  • you obtained at least 2,5 years of English language secondary education in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South-Africa, The USA, the UK or Ireland.


If you do not meet one of the above requirements, you may demonstrate proof of proficiency in English through any of the following tests:
  • IELTS Academic (International English language Testing System) with a minimum score of 7.0 overall. All sub scores should at least be 6.5.
  • TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 100. All sub scores should at least be 23.
  • ITP-TOEFL (Institutional Testing Programme) offered by the Language & Training Centre at the EUR, or any other Dutch University. Minimum requirement: 627.
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or Cambridge C2 Proficiency with a minimum score of at least 185.

Rapid change necessitates a new type of cultural professional with an advanced, critical approach to arts and culture's role in both the local environment and global economy. With a Master's degree from Erasmus University's Arts and Culture Studies program, you will learn the skills required to be leader in this new era for the arts and culture sector.
Arts, Culture and Society prepares you for management, policy or communication positions with companies and cultural institutions such as museums, theatre companies and orchestras, festivals and publishers. But also if your ambition is a policy or management position with the government or a role in academic education and research then this master is an excellent choice.

Cultural Economics and Entrepreneurship will jumpstart your career in the cultural sector. You can work at the heart of (international) cultural organisations, government agencies, NGO's or SME's, developing new business strategies, as PR advisor or policy maker. You can also start a career as a journalist, consultant or teacher. It's even possible to start your own creative business.

Tourism, Culture and Society will make you an eligible candidate for many positions, including: city marketeer, policy maker, consultant or researcher. Many organizations are looking for candidates like you, such as governments, film commissions, museums and festivals. But you can also start your own business in the field of cultural and/or media tourism.
