The master's specialisation Mathematics and Education optimally prepares you to teach the subject of mathematics to Dutch secondary school students, based on a solid background of high quality research in mathematics. The programme comprises a one-year mathematics component, followed by an education component in the second year. This master's specialisation uniquely enables you to make a relevant impact on society by educating today's secondary school pupils for tomorrow's challenges in the field of mathematics.
Do you want to fascinate our younger generations for the field of mathematics? Are you aiming for a career as a modern and flexible teacher? Then, the Mathematics and Education master's specialisation is the right choice for you. After completion, you will have obtained your teacher qualification, which is required for employment as a mathematics teacher in Dutch secondary schools. You can also participate in the World Teachers Programme for bilingual and international teaching. As the main education component is taught in Dutch, all applicants must provide proof of proficiency in Dutch language.

Connect theory and practice of teaching through the application of your academic knowledge about mathematics to issues of classroom practice.
The entire MSc programme in combination with the Education specialisation consists of two components:
* Mathematics component (60 EC)
* Education (60 EC)
The Mathematics component of the specialisation comprises a research project of at least 20 EC in one of the research groups of the Leiden Mathematical Institute, including a master's thesis and an oral presentation, and at least 30 EC of courses to be selected in correspondence with the research topic. Some of these courses may be taken from the national Mastermath programme.
The Education component of the specialisation is offered by the Leiden Graduate School of Education (ICLON) and includes courses on didactics and adolescent psychology and an educational research project and school practice. In addition, you can also participate in the World Teachers Programme to prepare for bilingual and international teaching.

The Master's specialisation in Mathematics and Education prepares you for a career in high school teaching mathematics. It combines a training in mathematics with a training in didactics and education.
Successful completion of this programme qualifies you to teach in the Dutch high school system (in other words, successful completion leads to the so-called 'eerstegraads lesbevoegdheid' – the Dutch High School Teaching Certificate).
