As humans, we may be intrigued by the complexity of any daily activity. How does it actually work to perceive, to act, to decide, and to remember? On the one hand, if we understand how our own intelligence works, we can use this knowledge to make computers smarter. On the other hand, by making computers behave more like humans, we learn more about how our own cognition works. Its purpose is twofold: to gain a better understanding of the neuro-cognitive basis of human cognition, and to further the realisation of human-like and user-friendly cognition in artificial systems. The AI Master's programme at Radboud University has a distinctly cognitive focus. This cognitive focus leads to a highly interdisciplinary programme where students gain skills and knowledge from a number of different areas such as mathematics, computer science, psychology and neuroscience combined with a core foundation of artificial intelligence. The Intelligent Technology specialisation focuses on using state-of-the-art AI techniques to make smarter artificial systems that are meant to facilitate or interact with humans.

Waarom aan de Radboud University Nijmegen?

This specialisation focuses on the application of AI techniques and principles in healthcare, assistive technology, human-robot interaction, and other application areas: you will work with stakeholders and companies on actual problems for which novel solutions are sought. Many of our students go on to work for companies and NGOs that use sophisticated AI techniques to interact with humans, such as natural language processing, explainable AI, neurotechnology, or human-robot interaction.

tracks

track Neurotechnology and Healthcare track

This track focuses on the application of AI techniques to monitor and improve healthcare and quality of life.

You will learn how to build clinical decision support systems and classification tools to better recognize cancer tissue and monitor patients. You will study brain-computer interaction to allow patients with ALS syndrome to communicate via their brain signals, and develop auditory and visual neuro-prosthetics to allow the deaf and the blind to regain rudimentary auditory and visual perception. Most students work on applied AI projects in close collaboration with the medical hospital, patients organisations, and/or neuroscientists.

track Interactive agents

This track focuses on artificial agents and devices that can understand the world, communicate or display, and interact from a human-centric point of view.

You will study advanced computer vision algorithms (e.g., VAEs, GANs) and create virtual worlds, study advanced AI methods for robots that interact with humans, as well as designing methods and experiments for evaluating their impact. You will work in interdisciplinary teams for experimentation using media technologies such as mobile apps, virtual reality or interactive installations. You will work with devices (e.g., tactile) that connect humans to machines. You will be introduced into state-of-the-art NLP, text and multimedia mining.

track Societal Impact of AI

This track focuses on the development and practical application of AI that promotes human values.

You will learn about the societal expectations, hypes, concerns and debates surrounding recent or near future AI, and will be taught how to contribute to the calibration of expectations about AI. You will study the main aspects and phases of policy making and/or company management, as well as the general theories and approaches in applied ethics. You will learn how to communicate professionally with stakeholders regarding the research, design, development or application of AI. You will study how to translate complex practical requirements into a work plan for developing, improving or extending a computer program, design or artifact, with a focus on the expectations and concerns of societal stakeholders and their values.

objectives
After following an introductory course which will provide an insight in the current topics of Artificial Intelligence, you will continue with core courses that form the specialisation such as Bayesian and decision models in artificial intelligence, Advances in Human-Computer interfacing. You can also choose from a multitude of elective courses to further deepen your specialisation or to broaden your perspective by following electives from the Brain-Computer Interfacing specialisation.
