If you choose to study Linguistics in Nijmegen you will have a unique opportunity to put together your own programme. With the exception of your thesis, all subjects are optional. You can choose from a wide range of interesting advanced topics in fields as diverse as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, second language learning, language description and linguistic diversity. You will be working closely with top researchers. In fact, you will be in the middle of a research environment where important discoveries are being made and the chances are that you will be involved in some of them.
We really take care of our students and pay special attention to the (practical) needs of international students. We have a lot of experience with students from all over the world coming here to study and we help you to hit the ground running. The courses are very intensive and you will learn a great deal in one year. You can also expect to 'grow' academically. There are great opportunities for internships at leading institutes in the Netherlands.
Linguistics is taught at a very high level in Nijmegen, and we are known for our excellent teaching and research.

The Master's programme in Language Variation and Multilingualism gives students the flexibility to build their own specialisation, choosing from a wide range of linguistic subjects, including phonology, pragmatics and description and changes of languages. Also, you will have the option to follow courses that are taught at the department of Cognitive Neuroscience, to give yourself the possibility to specialise further. During your studies, you will benefit from personal guidance from your tutor.

Courses are typically 5 EC and the Master's Thesis is 20 EC. The programme offers you some freedom in picking and choosing those courses that interest you the most in the field of linguistics or related area. If your relevant language proficiency is good enough, you can also choose language-specific courses.

objectives
The emphasis is on integrating theoretical and empirical work. During the year, you will cover - depending on the subjects you choose - the full range of linguistics from the description of languages to changes in languages, from phonology to pragmatics.
Graduates can find jobs in which linguistic knowledge is applied, e.g. in language testing, ICT or communication, at publishing companies or in the educational sector. Because of its strong research components, many graduates go on to do a PhD.
instruction modes
The Master's specialisation in General Linguistics has a course load of 60 EC* (one-year). All the courses are 5 EC and the Master's Thesis is 20 EC. This specialisation offers you the opportunity to pick and choose those courses that interest you the most in the field of Linguistics or related area. If you have the sufficient language proficiency, you can also choose language specific courses.

When following Language Variation and Multilingualism you can specialise in different profiles. Here are some examples of profiles you can develop:

Second language acquisition/learning
Courses: Topics in Second Language Acquisition, Computer-assisted Language Learning, English for Specific Purposes, Language Testing.
Language variation
Courses: Linguistic Universals and Variation, Languages and Society: Variation and Diversity, Global English, Variation and Change in English: Present and Past, Variation, Yypology and Optimality Theory.
Theoretical linguistics
Courses: Variation, Typology and Optimality Theory, Introduction to Multimodal Analysis, Variation and Change in English: Present and Past, Syntax in the Lab.
Psycholinguistics
Courses: Psycholinguistics, Early Language Production and Perception, Topics in Second Language Acquisition.
Communication and pragmatics
Courses: Global English, Introduction to Multimodal Analysis, Language in the Hand: Methodological Approaches to Multimodal Communication, Translation Studies.

You are admissible if you have a completed a completed Bachelor's degree from a Research University in Linguistics or a specific language such as German or Dutch. Students with a Bachelor's degree in Communication and Information Studies can also apply, provided they have successfully completed at least 30 EC worth of real linguistics courses

Requirements: a TOEFL score of ≥100 (internet based) and all subscores ≥22; an IELTS score of ≥7.0, subscores ≥ 6.5; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge C1 advanced or C2 Proficiency with a mark of C or higher.

InTenS staat voor In Taal En Spraak, de twee zaken waarin taalwetenschappers zich specialiseren. Doel van de vereniging is het behartigen van de belangen van haar leden in de ruimste zin van het woord. Dit varieert van het organiseren van gezellige activiteiten ter bevordering van de onderlinge contacten tot het regelen van vele praktische zaken.

After completing your Master's you can get your 'eerstegraads bevoegdheid' to become a teacher in the Netherlands (leraar Engels / leraar Nederlands). With this degree, you can teach the higher grades of secondary school in the Netherlands (HAVO and VWO).

This programme offers you an intensive learning experience in both linguistics and the English language (or another second language that you choose). This will further enhance your language skills and may allow you to pursue a career working in both your native language and the second language.
