The world loves American culture, but is deeply distrustful of American power and politics. In Nijmegen, we offer critical insights into both. Our Master's programme gives students the opportunity to acquire solid expertise in relation to the concept of 'America' in a variety of fields: US history, literature, (popular) culture, as well as political history, foreign policy, constitutional law and social sciences. Nijmegen distinguishes itself from other American Studies programmes through its emphasis on the cultural and political relations between the United States, its neighbours, and Europe.

opbouwThe Master's programme offers you the specialisation: Transatlantic Studies: History, Culture and Politics. Each specialisation consists of several compulsory foundation courses related to its central theme, but you can also create your own custom-made programme by choosing between the optional courses offered or by following an internship.

You are admissible if you have a completed Bachelor's degree in the Humanities, Liberal Arts, International Relations, or a related area, with sufficient courses (30 EC) relevant to the programme.

Requirements: a TOEFL score of ≥100 (internet based) and all subscores ≥22; an IELTS score of ≥7.0, subscores ≥ 6.5; Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) or Cambridge C1 advanced or C2 Proficiency with a mark of C or higher.
