Curating Art and Cultures is a unique, two-year programme offered jointly by the University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and leading museums and cultural institutions in the Netherlands.
The programme is designed to train the curators of the future. Taking place in both the lecture hall and the exhibition space, it prepares you for a career as a professional curator by strengthening your disciplinary and theoretical foundations, and equipping you with the necessary research skills and practical experience.
The programme responds to the growing demand for academically-grounded curatorial professionals with excellent (inter)disciplinary and theoretical backgrounds. It teaches you to engage with crucial theoretical concepts and contemporary issues regarding the collection and display of art objects and cultural artefacts. It also encourages you to deepen your own disciplinary knowledge and develop your research practices, culminating in the Master's thesis.
In addition to developing your theoretical foundations, you will also have the opportunity to work as a 'curator in training' during the year-long, curatorial internship at one of the programme's partnering museums and cultural institutions. During the internship, you will receive hands-on training in all aspects of professional museum practice, from research for publications to organising exhibitions.

The Master's programme Curating Art and Cultures sees the museum as an institution and as a repository of objects with both a history and a life in the present and teaches you the skills needed to become a curator or a researcher. Students choose one of two unique specialisations: Curating Art and Cultures or Arts of the Netherlands. The first specialisation focuses on curatorial theory and practice, while the second highlights research into Dutch art in a global context.

objectives

Curating Art and Cultures prepares you for a career in a museum or in any other cultural institution that demands advanced academic research skills. As a graduate of the programme, you will have developed the theoretical expertise and obtained the preliminary work experience necessary for a curatorial or research career at museums of art, ethnography, design and history, galleries and exhibition spaces or any other cultural institution which focuses on research and presentation of objects and cultures. Laying a solid foundation for doing research, the programme also prepares for the PhD positions that are necessary to qualify for a further academic career. It is also suited for those who envision an independent career as freelance curator, researcher, journalist, writer or cultural entrepreneur.

Graduates interested in pursuing an academic career have gone on to do research internships or to pursue a PhD. If you are interested in pursuing an academic career, you can explore the possibility of a corresponding two-year Research Master's with the programme coordinator.
