The first year, you will follow courses introducing all biotechnological disciplines. In the second year, you will go more into depth. In both years, a number of applications combining those disciplines will be introduced. In te third year, you can choose from different directions and different courses and finalize the programme with a 4 month lasting research thesis.
objectives
After successful completion of this BSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- apply and integrate basic theoretical knowledge of biotechnological key disciplines physical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, process technology, molecular and cellular biology and genetics;
- explain an entire biotechnological product or production process;
- apply laboratory techniques, analytical measurements, mathematical, computational and statistical methods in biotechnological-oriented cases;
- resolve (under supervision) a pre-defined biotechnological research question, development or design problem
- develop (under supervision) a research plan in which research question, hypothesis, experimental set-up and data analysis are described in relation to relevant literature;
- execute (under supervision) simple scientific experiments, test the hypothesis and analyse and interpret own experimental data and data presented in literature;
- demonstrate an academic attitude;
- communicate verbally and in writing about results of learning or experiments;
- co-operate in a multi-disciplinary team;
- judge (under supervision) technological, ethical, societal and economic consequences of biological, chemical and technological changes;
- reflect (under supervision) upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt
After completing the bachelor nearly everybody enrols a master programme. 2/3 of the MSc graduates start their first profession in a research and development environment at a university , research institute or R&D department in industry. About 1/3 starts as process engineer in industry.
