Its practical applications include age-old techniques such as brewing and fermentation, which are still important today. In the past decades, gene modification has revolutionized the biotechnology industry, spawning countless new products and improving established processes. More and more types of fermentation are being used, and most new medicines or vaccines are products of biotechnology. Modern biotechnology has become an applied area of science with a multidisciplinary approach embracing recombinant DNA technology, cellular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, as well as process design, engineering, and modelling.

In the first year, students start by following courses linked to their own interest and specialisation. At the end of the first year, they work out a multidisciplinary project that is linked to a question or challenge from industry. During the second year, students perform two research and/or design project, one thesis and a second thesis or internship.

objectives

After successful completion of this MSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:

- select, understand and integrate skills in basic and applied disciplines of biotechnology;

- apply advanced knowledge of own specialization;

- design a new biotechnological product or process by applying knowledge of the biotechnological key disciplines in an integrated approach;

- develop a research plan in which research question, hypothesis, experimental set-up and data analysis are described in relation to relevant literature;

- execute experiments, test hypothesis and analyse and interpret own experimental data and/or data presented in literature and on internet, in order to meet the objectives of the biotechnological research and development project;

- design a new biotechnological product or process that meets the objectives and demands of an interested party;

- demonstrate an academic attitude

- communicate verbally and in writing about the results of learning, experiments and design

- co-operate in an international multi-disciplinary team;

- judge technological, ethical, societal and economic consequences of biological, chemical and technological changes in the design of a biotechnological product or production process;

- reflect upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning
