In collaboration with the Delft Kavli Institute of Nanosccience we offer the Casimir pre-PhD specialisation – which prepares and educates you for PhD positions at one of the two research institutes or elsewhere. The programme places strong emphasis on working in a research environment, in particular within the six themes of the Research Schools. A selection will take place for admittance to this programme. All students within the programme will write a research proposal: upon successfully completing the programme, candidates can compete for a special Casimir PhD grant.

The programme is aimed at students who intend to acquire a PhD-position after receiving their master's degree. Almost all of the students participating in this programme choose to pursue a PhD and have no problem whatsoever to find a PhD position. The programme is not open to everyone: students can express an interest in this 'honours programme' and have to meet several requirements along the way. Selection is done in March.

Key elements of the programme are the particular set of courses and gaining research experience in more than one department.
The master's programme consists of a compulsory and an optional part. The compulsory part includes a number of courses and a research project, study project and writing proposal.

Two of the courses should be chosen from the Theoretical Physics courses on offer. The other courses can be elected from all physics courses on offer. It is even possible to choose courses offered by other universities or graduate schools. One research project will be performed in a research group within LION, the Leiden Institute of Physics. The other research project can be done in a research group within or outside LION. Both research projects include a master's thesis and an oral presentation.

It opens the door to a career in high-tech industry, software and consultancy companies worldwide, or a career as a teacher, science communicator or science policy maker.
