This two-year master's programme is organised around the excellent research for which Leiden has reached international renown. Students in this programme will choose a supervisor with whom they set up a personal study plan. The supervisor will be the student's personal coach throughout the research master's. Supervisors are either Professors or Associate Professors and are specialised in a range of research topics.
The programme's courses aim to intensify and broaden the students' knowledge base and to develop research and publication skills. You are encouraged to visit conferences, contribute to workshops and to take courses outside the department.

As a research master's student you will follow a general theoretical course each year, and deepen your knowledge of chosen subjects through the modular advanced courses and in the annual research seminars, finally resulting in the thesis, thus embodying our concept of research-driven education. Students gain solid research skills while studying the methodological, theoretical and academic-philosophical aspects of the research focus of choice.

The research master's programme forms an excellent preparation for an academic career in archaeology. After graduation you will be a professional researcher who is able to conduct sound independent academic research. You will have obtained
- Knowledge of the recent debates concerning the many facets of archaeology, i.e. a worldwide archaeological and anthropological perspective on colonialism, globalisation, decolonisation;
- Ability to present one’s view in class discussions and to present in teams;
- Ability to write and critically evaluate a symposium presentation;
- Ability to better understand the multifarious roles of material culture in the interdisciplinary (re)constructions of the past.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt
The research master's programme forms an excellent preparation for an academic career in archaeology. Graduates are also eligible for archaeological functions at consultancies or in public service. Graduates may also find employment in positions not directly or indirectly related to their field: journalism, publishing, public relations and international organisations.
