major Classical Music

The basis is formed by Performing, Teaching and Entrepreneurship. We will train you to become an excellent and versatile musician, who also gained entrepreneurial and teaching skills.

The first year gives you a broad orientation to the degree and your future profession. In the following two years much attention is paid to the pedagogical subjects, amongst which internal and external projects stand central, as well as musical entrepreneurship. The general theoretical subjects are also completed in these two years. In the fourth and final year you can devote yourself completely to the study of your main instrument. The degree is completed with a final presentation which takes the form of a public concert examination.
During your study you are mostly busy with the practical side of music: study, study, and still more study. Playing in ensembles and orchestras forms and essential part of the study programme. In addition to the many chamber music ensembles, a percussion ensemble and choir also exist within the conservatoire. Large vocal, string and wind ensembles are organised. You can gain work experience with one of two professional orchestras: the Noord-Nederlands Orkest (NNO) in Groningen and the Koninklijke Militaire Kapel “Johan Willem Friso” in Assen.

Our curriculum is organised in a unique system, different from any other jazz school in Europe. It is based on top musicians from New York City who teach in Groningen on a rotating schedule.

'New York Comes to Groningen' is unique programme that gives students the opportunity to learn the values and tradition of the New York Jazz scene. In addition to ongoing weekly instruction from a world class Dutch faculty, each student receives lessons from our visiting New York jazz faculty.
These New York musicians each teach for one week as part of a rotating system, giving private lessons and history, listening sessions, theory, ensembles and master classes, covering subjects that concern every student. Thus, unlike a lot of other schools that bring in well known musicians ALL students work with ALL of the NY faculty, irrespective of their instrument. The courses of the permanent Dutch faculty include private lessons, theory, ear training, jazz history, arranging and a wide variety of performing ensembles. In addition to this, renowned international musicians make guest appearances, teaching master classes and workshops.

Als student Compositie, Muziek- en Studioproducties word je opgeleid voor een combinatie van het beroep van componist, arrangeur en producer. Het werkveld waarin je als student Compositie, Muziek- en Studioproducties terechtkomt is voortdurend in ontwikkeling. Om het onderwijs zo goed mogelijk aan te laten sluiten bij de praktijk, wordt de inhoud van de studie steeds aangepast. Naast de vaste docenten van de studierichting CMS – die ook allemaal in de beroepspraktijk actief zijn – krijg je ook gastlessen van vooraanstaande producers en componisten. Afgestudeerde CMS-studenten zijn op verschillende plekken werkzaam in de muziekindustrie, nationaal en internationaal, en in uiteenlopende functies zoals producer, songwriter, componist en arrangeur, in vast dienstverband of freelance.
De basis van je studie bestaat uit het uitbreiden van theoretische en praktische kennis. Je brengt veel tijd door in de studio. Vanaf het derde jaar kun je kiezen voor een van de afstudeerprofielen: instrumentale compositie, songwriting, toegepaste compositie voor de media of arrangeren-studiotechnologie. Een combinatie is ook mogelijk. In het vierde jaar studeer je hierop af.

major Conducting (Choir and Woodwind Ensembles)

In our Conducting Department you can choose either Woodwind Conducting or Choir Conducting

The main study subject Woodwind Conducting trains you to become a conductor for woodwind bands, fanfare orchestras or brass bands of various standards. The main subject Choir Conducting trains you to become a conductor for (amateur)choirs of various standards. After graduation you are equipped to put together, rehearse and perform whole programs with either orchestras or choirs.
To be a fully competent conductor you need to be able to play an instrument on a high level (Woodwind) or be an excellent singer (Choir). You need an exceptionally good ear, and be able to distinguish and put together different tone colours. And you must also have an outstanding theoretical and practical knowledge of harmony, and repertoire.
Students sometimes choose conducting as a second major study alongside a main instrumental study within the Classical Music department, or the Music Teaching degree. Students sometimes cobine this programme with their jobs.
