In this bachelor programme you will also study various crises and crisis management. Crises are unforeseen situaties which require impactful decisions in times of stress and chaos. How do governments and private actors work together to prevent, response to, and recover from crises such as natural disasters and pandemics? For example, in the course Case study: Fukushima, students will look into the Fukushima nuclear disaster that happened in 2011 in Japan. In the course Vital interests we will further discuss the SARS epidemic.
You study at Leiden University, one of the leading universities in continental Europe. The programme is located in The Hague, the international city of peace, justice and security.

As a Security Studies student, you can expect a full working week of about 40 hours. You will spend an average of 12 hours in-class and the rest of the time in independent study. You attend lectures focused upon a particular topic; the lectures are complemented by Skills labs. During the Skills Labs, first year students develop both academic and professional skills in small groups, guided by a tutor.
In your third year you have the opportunity to study abroad, do an internship or choose a minor.

The 3-year Bachelor’s of Security Studies provides students with the knowledge, skills and mindset to thoroughly analyse contemporary security and safety issues and devise strategic solutions in a complex and interconnected world. You understand the role of a wide range of stakeholders concerned with security, such as nations, businesses, and individuals; and the influence of institutions and the media. Your academic and professional abilities make you suitable for Master’s level study or entering the job market.
For a complete academic education, choose a master’s programme after obtaining your bachelor’s degree. Security Studies qualifies you for a wide range of master’s programmes at Leiden University and elsewhere, and guarantees entry to the Leiden University MA in Crisis and Security Management. Considering the International character of this programme, you may decide to go to a university abroad for your master’s degree which may well expand your international job prospects.
Your future workplace will depend upon your interests, knowledge and skills, and on the elective choices you’ve made during your study. Students who complete this programme find themselves prepared for a wide range of sectors and occupations. Your future employer might be an (inter)national organisation concerned with the execution of, or giving advice on, security and safety strategies.

The Security Studies programme offers a broad range of future employment prospects in business, or at governmental or NGOs. Career opportunities include such positions as:
- Security Consultant or advisor for public and private organisations

- Risk manager at a public or private organisation
- Strategic advisor for security strategies at a public or private organisation
Graduates of our programme will have a wide range of opportunities in different sectors and functions, from business to governmental ministries, thanks to their broad perspectives and strategic skills in approaching specific security and safety issues.
After completing the programme, you will be qualified to continue with a relevant master’s degree at Leiden University or elsewhere. After that, you might pursue your career in areas such as think tanks, government bodies, NGOs, or the police, as well as in the private sector, where security issues are increasingly important.
