Hosting one of the largest databases for developing countries in the world, we offer you a unique possibility to analyse poverty, inequality and economic development in an international context. Using recent theoretical insights and modern empirical methods, you will be actively involved in comparative research on issues in developing countries such as the impact of globalisation on economic growth, corruption, the education of children, child labour and women's empowerment.
State-of-the-art theoretical understanding are combined with a rigorous empirical approach. Besides international economics courses focusing on the role of international financial markets, institutions and culture, this track offers students in-depth theoretical and empirical knowledge of current issues in the development field.
The analytical attitude, strong empirical skills and broad theoretical knowledge obtained in this programme prepare you well for a career in international organisations (Worldbank, UN), national governments, development-oriented consultancy firms and research positions.

Waarom aan de Radboud University Nijmegen?
This programme distinguishes itself from development-oriented Master specialisation in its comparative and empirical orientation. The Nijmegen Economics Department is unique in that it hosts the database Developing World, one of the largest databases for developing countries in the world. Using this database, staff and Master students perform empirical research on a broad range of issues, like education of children, women's empowerment, human development, child labor and economic growth.
- This specialisation pushes you to understand and evaluate the economic situation in low and middle income countries. You are taught to look at the bigger picture and to analyse micro-level data. Your analysis provides information on intra-country and cross-national disparities.
- Acquire the knowledge and skills to inform national governments and international development organisations, which might lead to programmatic action aimed at bringing about positive changes to people’s lives in the poorest regions of our globe.
- Work with one of the world’s largest micro-level databases for developing countries. We offer a strong comparative and empirical orientation.
- Economics at Radboud University could be called ‘Economics Plus’: the ‘standard’ economics package is expanded on with relevant knowledge from related disciplines such as Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. With this strong theoretical background, you come to understand not just what is happening, but also how and why.
Studieprogramma
opbouwInternational Economics and Development is a specialisation of the one-year Master's programme in Economics, with a total course load of 60 EC. All courses are 6 EC and the Master's thesis is 18 EC. Internships are not a standard part of the curriculum, but we heartily support any student who wishes to do the extra work and undergo an internship.
Our unique and interesting combination of subjects will provide you with a well-rounded understanding in this field. Apart from development economics students will get an academic understanding of economics methodology, the role of international financial markets, behavioural economics and the important influence culture has on economic phenomena. And thanks to a choice of elective subjects, you can give your programme a unique focus that meets your academic interests.

In order to get admission to this Master's you will need a completed academic Bachelor's degree in Economics or a related discipline.

A TOEFL score of ≥90, with subscores not lower than 18;
A IELTS score of ≥6.5, with subscores not lower than 6.0;
Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) or Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a mark of C or higher.

Na de studie
Scientific and societal relevance go hand-in-hand in this programme. We address contemporary issues such as child labour, women's empowerment, human development, children's schooling and economic growth by evaluating societal developments with the help of academic theories. We discuss current issues as well as ones we believe will be pressing in the near future.
Upon completing the Master’s programme in International Economics and Development, you will be knowledgeable about recent developments in the field. You will be an up-and-coming professional who can understand and reflect on the international, professional and academic literature in the field of international economics and development; report independently on a range of issues in international economics and development, including state of the art empirical and theoretical studies; use and apply statistical tools and methods; conduct independent research; present and defend your views and research outcomes and maintain a critical attitude towards your own work and that of others in your field.
