Science and technology fundamentally influence society. The reverse is also true: society shapes the ways in which science and technology evolve. You become a critical researcher and bridge-builder.
In the specialisation, you will learn how science and society influence each other, how the various social and scientific actors interact and how implicit assumptions, values, and interests of these actors can be made visible and open to discussion. You will also learn under which circumstances tensions arise between science and society, how we can understand these tensions and what solutions are possible. 
In that process, you acquire skills in critical thinking, social research, and the analysis of media and culture. At the end, you will be a biologist, chemist, mathematician, etc. that understands the philosophical assumptions as well as political and social values in scientific developments. You will be able to make scientists familiar with societal perceptions, and to contribute to science-related consultancy for governments, businesses, or citizen groups.

Science and technology have a profound influence on society. The reverse is also true: society shapes the ways in which science and technology evolve. The COVID-19 pandemic recently showed how important this link is: universities and research institutions rely on public support, while businesses and governments require scientific knowledge. Therefore, scientific experts greatly benefit from a deep understanding of social processes.

In this two-year specialisation, science students deepen their understanding of science, while specialising in ethical and societal questions. They become bridge-builders between science and society.

You will further deepen your knowledge in your scientific field in the first year and then learn to connect scientific knowledge with divergent perspectives and interests of various stakeholders in your second year.
You can choose between two overlapping tracks: In Science and Societal Interaction you learn about societal issues and social scientific methods. In Philosophies and Worldviews you learn about scientific and ethical norms of research and the philosophical basis of scientific knowledge.
The specialisation is closely connected to the Institute for Science, Innovation & Society (iSIS). The institute brings together a group of experts from various disciplines and backgrounds in order to jointly tackle issues at the interface of science and society.
You get to take classes with students from all natural and computer scientific fields.
You will get to work in positions that deal with complex real-world issues, combining your scientific background with the analytical and communicative skills developed during your specialisation in Science in Society.
