This Master's programme has a selection procedure. For more information about the selection procedure, please check here.

Biomolecular sciences is a very internationally oriented research and development field that benefits from strong multidisciplinary know-how in genetics, microbiology, molecular cell biology, computational and structural biology, biochemistry, and systems biology. During this Master’s programme, you will acquire in-depth knowledge and skills through upper-level theoretical and practical training. You will become highly competent in molecular biology, as well as in the more applied aspects of these fields. This will give you excellent prospects for an independent career in an academic, medical, or industrial research environment, or as a scientific consultant for the public or private sector.

The programme content is organized by the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB) and obviously teaching is closely related to the research performed at this institute. Research at GBB is strongly fundamental and curiosity-driven and contains specializations in the following areas:

This selective Master's degree programme is designed for students primarily aiming for a career in research. The programme has been designed for a start at the beginning of the academic year. Students who would like to start during the academic year and/or aim for a career that focuses on the business and policy side of science are referred to our Master’s programme in Biology.

I spend a large amount of my time in the lab, which I enjoy

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a major in Biomedical Sciences. During the second year of my Bachelor’s programme, I developed an interest in microbiome research and saw myself becoming a researcher in that field. I chose the Master’s in Biomolecular Sciences because I was interested in the research topics and the associated labs, and because I like how the programme strongly focuses on preparing you for a career in science, either in academia or industry...
Because of this internship I have spent a large amount of my time in the lab, which I enjoy. This Master’s programme offers a lot of flexibility in discovering and pursuing your interests. You are well supervised, but you also have your own responsibilities. There is a wide range of elective courses to choose from, and I like to select courses that expose me to new and unfamiliar subjects so that I can discover my strengths and interests.Next year, I hope to study abroad and start a PhD programme after completing my Master’s. My ultimate goal is to lead my own research group and contribute to research on a daily basis.

Improving enzymes to make them suitable for use in industry (research example)

The group of our Prof. Dr. Marco Fraaije at the University of Groningen is involved in a project called ROBOX co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Programme for Research and Innovation. The ROBOX project brings together leading experts from Europe's top universities together with the biotechnology industry. Cutting edge biotechnology is brought to the next level to eventually replace classical chemical processes with biotechnology using enzymes - nature's most sophisticated machines.
