specialisatie Biomedical Research
By choosing Biomedical Research as your specialisation, you will be able to make a significant contribution to preventing and fighting diseases as a research analyst.
As a biomedical research analyst you contribute to new insights and progress in battling cancer, heart and blood vessel conditions, diabetes, asthma and chronic metabolic diseases. With the help of DNA and protein analyses you can research the molecular causes of a disease very much in detail. With stem cell research you can work out a therapy. You will be using advanced tools and equipment, and use bodily substances donated by patients, such as blood cells and antibodies, in your research. You will work in a laboratory of a university medical centre, at a pharmaceutical company or at a renowned research institute. Your ultimate goal is to contribute to preventing and/or treating serious diseases.

The title 'Biotechnology' may sound more technical than it actually is. In practice, you work in a team of people and do research for the good of other people.
Within the Biotechnology specialisation, you work in laboratories and research things that make us feel better, improve our health or even heal us. You develop new medicines, such as a new vaccine against malaria, or look for the causes of diseases. Apart from that, you develop large-scale processes for extracting and producing growth substances and flavourings or for purifying a vaccine. It is also possible to specialise in plant biotechnology, which focuses on faster growth of plants or making them more resistant against diseases and pests.
You can also discover the secrets of bio-informatics. Now that the mystery of the human DNA has been solved, specialists are needed to extract information from the collected data, e.g. to discover the cause of a disease with the quick detection method or work on smarter medicines. All these exciting areas can come back in your job if you choose to specialise in biotechnology!

Because of the increasing complexity of the daily tasks of a forensic analyst, the demands made of them are ever increasing.
Mostly this is due to the rapid developments in the fields of molecular biology, analytical chemistry and applied physics. The Biotechnology specialisation of Forensic Sciences makes sure you stay on top of all the latest developments and teaches you the skills you need to become a forensic analyst.

Chemistry students and graduates sometimes have a hard time explaining what exactly they are doing. But that is certainly not the case for specialists in Process Engineering!
When you tell people that you are developing new artificial turf for the Amsterdam ArenA stadium for instance, you will certainly have all eyes on you, especially those of your male listeners. Add that you are co-developing a revolutionary day cream and you will also win the attention of your female audience. The most exciting and innovative products you can think of might be a result of process engineers' hard work, always striving to create better, cheaper and more environmentally friendly products. There will always be enough work waiting for process engineers!

Our specialisation in Water Technology will teach you how important it is to develop and implement sustainable water conservation technologies and research new, innovative ways of dealing with water.
Water is one of our most valuable resources. However, due to a high population growth rate, increasing industrialisation and climate change, this resource is put under a lot of pressure. Leeuwarden is the place to be when it comes to water technology. Dozens of companies, institutes and organisations from Leeuwarden play an important international role in developing new and sustainable water technologies. Think of windmills that can extract water from the air in dry areas or a reactor that recycles sewage water to produce drinking water and dung.
