Seen from an archaeological perspective and in so far as they are relevant to heritage management and modern museum practices, this master's specialisation combines academic and practical aspects of cultural and landscape studies, politics, cultural theory and the environmental sciences.
This fascinating journey will take you through current approaches and ethical issues and allows you to experience some of them in daily practice.

The specialisation of Heritage and Museum Studies consists of three lecture series, supplemented with lectures by guest speakers, including international speakers. You will also choose a Region Focus Area, either centered on a region or a period, supplementing your main focus. Together with students from other master's specialisations you will follow the general course Archaeological Theory. Finally, you will choose two elective courses. Your master's thesis is the programme's capstone.
objectives
In the course of this programme you will gain understanding of methodological debates, including assumptions, bias and problems inherent in different approaches and methods. This will help you develop skills to identify a research problem and set up an appropriate research design. You will have obtained knowledge in research methods in heritage and museum studies, and have an understanding of the ethical principles involved. You will be able to critically engage with global challenges that underpin heritage debate, identity, destruction and protection of cultural heritage.

The broad array of skills that you will acquire as an heritage expert will make you an attractive target for a wide range of employers. These skills will equip you for a variety of positions in the Netherlands or abroad, in government or in business. They will also make you an objective, critical and, above all, articulate and creative thinker. Creative thinkers have the ability to draw logical and accurate conclusions from incomplete information, and to come up with practical and original solutions. This ability will make you a great fit with many different professions.
After finishing the MA in Heritage and Museum Studies, you will be ready for a position as a heritage policy maker in government or NGO. You may also want to pursue a carreer in a museum or other heritage institution.
