Through its theoretical approach the programme is also closely related to the two-year Research MA in Arts, Literature and Media; consequently, many of our courses are crosslisted. An important difference with this ResMA programme is that the scope of our one-year curriculum generally does not allow for an integrated internship or semester abroad. These options are, however, open to those able and willing to extend their studies with us for a third semester.
The four main themes of this programme are:
- Cultural Theory, with a special focus on literary theory
- Comparative Literature
- Interculturality (cross-cultural approach)
- Intermediality (cross-mediatic approach)

The master in Cultural Analysis: Literature and Theory consists of two semesters, during which you earn 30 EC each semester.
Semester 1
The first semester consists of three courses worth 10 EC each.
Semester 2
During the second semester you will study one course worth 10 EC and spend the rest of the semester researching and writing your MA thesis, worth 20 EC. During your thesis trajectory you will be guided by a faculty member from the Leiden Literary Studies Department.

Upon graduation, you will be capable of conducting high-quality research under the supervision of a Leiden faculty member, and will possess a thorough knowledge of one of the specialist fields of study offered. You will be able to independently gather literature and primary sources in the field, evaluate their quality, formulate clear, well-constructed research questions and report the results of your research both orally and in writing.
The master in Media Studies at Leiden University aims to equip you with a range of important skills and knowledge that will help you thrive in your future career. Your specialised expertise is complemented by vocational skills and the ability to apply multidisciplinary, critical-thinking skills to solve even the most complex conceptual problems.

Alumni of the master's programme in Cultural Analysis: Literature and Theory are employed in a wide range of fields. Our graduates have taken roles within public relations, journalism, in translation agencies, or as copywriters, correctors, education-centre directors, policy makers in city councils and ministries, cultural representatives, art editors for newspapers, librarians or editors at publishing houses. You will also be qualified to continue in academic research and could apply for a PhD programme.
