The starting point to promote health is human behaviour and the environments in which that behaviour occurs. In this programme, we focus on understanding and changing behaviours that contribute to health and well-being. Health education enables people to increase control over and improve their health by, for example, developing skills and capabilities. Health promotion ensures that environments, communities, and policies are beneficial to health and well-being.

You are equipped with important tools for understanding human behaviour and leveraging a comprehensive planned and systematic approach to the development, implementation and evaluation of health-promoting interventions.

This programme is for you if:

  • you have a keen interest in understanding (un)healthy behaviours and how environments impact health;
  • you are passionate about developing health-promoting interventions and policies;
  • you want to make an impact and address complex societal challenges and the wicked problems we face in our current society.

Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

At Maastricht University you work in groups of a maximum of 12 students on practical projects that deal with a health-related theme in a multidisciplinary manner. You get factual knowledge, but you also learn how to collaborate, present or how to set up a research project. Practical and subject-oriented skills training are amply discussed. Together you look for solutions and formulate answers. Independently, but always under the supervision of a tutor.

Health institutes
At regional, national and international health institutes, Health Education and Promotion graduates can be found working on both preventative and awareness campaigns. But they also work on intervention development and help evaluate health education strategies.

Consultancy
At consultancies, graduates provide national and international organisations with advice on how to develop health interventions or improve health education strategies.

Governments
Some Health Education and Promotion graduates opt for a career working for a local or national government where they work on a broad range of health initiatives, ranging from the prevention of infectious diseases to healthy diets and exercise promotion campaigns.

Academia
The programme will also provide you with a solid scientific background. A career as a PhD student will therefore also be open to you.
