Historical Studies allows you to focus on the full range of periods, including Ancient history, Medieval history and Modern history. At the same time a wide variety of specialisations is offered, such as demographic and family history, cultural history and political history.
The two-year research master's programme Historical Studies at the Radboud University Nijmegen will offer you the opportunity to realise a study based on your own particular interests and ambitions within a sound educational framework. You will be coached by an experienced researcher who will serve as your individual tutor.

Founded by the Romans as one of their headquarters on the borders of their empire (Noviomagus: New Market), Nijmegen became an imperial stronghold in the Middle Ages. The enchanting site of the former imperial palts (Valkhof) on the river Waal (the main branch of the Rhine) still recalls this extraordinary past.

Together with students from the specialisations Arts and Visual Culture and Literary Studies, you will concentrate on the important theoretical and methodological issues and backgrounds of the Humanities.

2e jaar In the last stage of the curriculum, with the help of your tutor, you will choose a historical subject of your interest on which you will write a publishable scholarly article and a research proposal. This culminates in a master's thesis in which you will develop new insights into a historical problem.

This research programme is developed as an answer to the call for a new generation of young Historical Studies researchers with an international outlook. The programme prepares capable and young specialists of different specialisations in Historical Studies, who will be competitive and outstanding amongst others. This programme is intended to prepare its students for an academic career, in particular as a PhD researcher in the Netherlands or abroad. Through the IRUN network, Nijmegen has formal partnerships with various universities including Barcelona, Duisburg-Essen, Glasgow, Ljubljana, Münster, Poitiers and Siena.
In short, at the end of the programme you'll:- Have acquired heuristic research skills at an advanced level.
- Have gained general knowledge of leading perspectives, theories, concepts, and paradigm shifts in the humanities and advanced knowledge specifically for own field.
- Be able to engage in the public debates regarding issues in the humanities.
- Have acquired English academic writing skills and have practiced writing a publishable scholarly article and a proposal for a PhD project.
- Have started to build up a professional international network.
