Art and Performance Research Studies offers two specialisations: one is academic, focused on theoretical /historical research in the arts disciplines (art history, musicology, theatre and performance studies and cultural studies); the other is artistic, focused on artistic research through a practice-based process in fine arts, dance, music, performance and film, among other art disciplines. Central to the programme is that students reflect on and learn to do research in an inter- and cross-disciplinary framework and learn to understand the position of the arts and the artist in society.
The programme facilitates and enables the critical development of your research ideas by shared courses, a customised choice of electives, and individual tutorials and offers comprehensive cross-disciplinary debates with expert staff from all art disciplines, both theoretical and practical.

instruction modes
The Research Master's in Art and Performance Research Studies is a two-year programme with two specialisations, in which you explore the interconnections between the art and performance disciplines and between theory and practice. The programme comprises 120 ECTS credits:
- 36 credits for core courses.
- 36 credits for electives.
- 18 credits for tutorials.
- 30 credits for the thesis (12 credits for the thesis seminar and 18 for the thesis).

The Research Master's in Art and Performance Research Studies trains and prepares students for a future in academia. Former students have found positions as PhD candidates (paid and unpaid, and both strictly academic as well as practice-based) and as teachers.
At the same time, you will also gain a valuable foundation for a variety of professions in the cultural sector. Former students from Art and Performance have found positions in the research departments of museums, as independent researchers and as producers of theatre performances, exhibitions and musical venues. Some have become independent writers.
Artistic Research students have joined other educational institutions focusing on art and research, and work as independent artists, curators, programmers, teachers and project developers.
