A transition to a society based Sustainable Energy is necessary to be self-sufficient, meet the growing global demand for energy, and address the threat of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. This transition will require fundamental innovations affecting the world's energy landscape.

Securing a sustainable energy future implies an energy transition that will require a new generation of dedicated engineers and researchers capable of developing, optimising, and integrating sustainable energy sources including solar power, wind power, and energy from biomass. Because of the intermittency of these sources storage of energy is an important factor for success. This requires innovative batteries and research into hydrogen as an energy source. New technologies need to be integrated into existing power networks and market structures. The design of new forms of energy distribution, energy market structures, and smart grids is necessary to satisfy the energy needs of modern societies.

Waarom aan de Delft University of Technology?

Engineers in Sustainable Energy Technology have a broad knowledge of the field and can act as the system integrators of the energy transition.
They can bring different energy subsystems together into one system. Their engineering skills include renewable energy generation, distribution systems, and storage. In addition they can integrate systems that can manage the fluctuating energy supply and demand. They are also aware of the challenges of the energy market and innovation management. There is a lot of demand for engineers in this field, because governments and industry have ambitious plans for investments in sustainable energy.

opbouwIn the academic year 2017-2018 the Master Sustainable Energy Technologies offers a new programme. Students will obtain an overview of the Sustainable Energy field in the first quarter and choose a cluster of three profiles.
1e jaar The programme of the first year of MSc SET at Delft University of Technology (60 EC) is made up of Core courses, Profile courses and a System Integration Project.

During the Master, a student proves his/her level of understanding and ability to carry out a scientific research or design project, using the acquired competences (knowledge/skills and attitude). MSc SET graduates combine a broad knowledge in the field of sustainable energy technology with an in-depth specialisation in one field. The programme provides engineers with broadly based energy technology competences.
Graduates can apply their acquired knowledge and skills in projects involving a system-based and interdisciplinary approach. Upon completion of the programme the engineer will be able to apply the fundamentals of SET to provide technical solutions for sustainable energy related problems, taking into account economic, social, environmental and ethical factors. The engineer will become an expert in at least one of the sub-areas of the field and be able to take part in the ongoing research in that area.
