The mission of the division BioTherapeutics is to develop and advance innovative biopharmaceuticals for successful interventions and effective therapies in auto-immune-like disorders. To study the complex interaction of drugs in different organic systems, research is performed at the gene and immune cell level in various in vitro and in vivo models.Interventions developed so far range from experimental therapies using antibody-based interventions and therapeutic vaccines to gene therapeutic approaches.
Another research focus is the identification of novel biomarkers for disease and design of novel and innovative ways of drug administration via cutting-edge formulations and applications for drug-administrations. We design, synthesize, and characterize polypept(o)ids and their application in nanomedicine to improve existing therapies or enable novel diagnostic or therapeutic approaches.
The Division BioTherapeutics of the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research is involved in the master specialisation BioTherapeutics.
Admission to this specialisation may be restricted by available places.

The core of the programme is ‘research-based learning’ and developing a critical, inquisitive and self-reflective attitude and the skills to systematically analyse scientific issues. A major part of the programme involves active participation in ongoing research projects; facilitated by intensive coaching during an internship covering all aspects of the research cycle; being concluded with research thesis/ oral presentation. Throughout the programme students follow lecture series and seminars.
objectives
The BioTherapeutics specialisation consists of compulsory and optional components. You will start with the Introduction Course Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences with specialisation in BioTherapeutics. The major compulsory components are two research projects, both of which include writing a Master's thesis. You can choose your own research projects. The major research project must be in one of the research themes of the LACDR research cluster BioTherapeutics. The minor research project is preferably conducted in a different discipline of Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPS). For the second research project you are advised to go abroad to gain international experience. Guidance and advice about studying abroad is provided by the International Office of the Faculty of Science.
Other compulsory components are: a literature study, including the writing of an essay or thesis, attending one advanced lecture series in a discipline of BPS, attending the Scientific Conduct course, and attending at least ten or colloquia presented by other Master's students in BPS. In addition, students are required to complete a portfolio on advanced academic skills and career orientation by attending symposia, workshops and career events. For the optional component, Master's students can choose from additional courses or work placements.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt
Students are trained for a research career in drug research and development, not for a career as a (public) pharmacist. Most graduates proceed to a PhD training at Leiden University or another university. Graduates from the LACDR are in great demand in the pharmaceutical industry and in other research institutes. An extensive worldwide network of research contacts allows students to obtain research experience abroad during their MSc or PhD studies.
