In the Media Technology master's programme we offer you a place where students, artists and scientists do research by creating innovative solutions, inspired by results and principles of science. To achieve this, the curriculum focuses on creative exploration and on the understanding of science and technology. The programme encourages you to draw from the knowledge available throughout Leiden University and the ArtScience programme of the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. After graduation, you are prepared for any future career involving creative and critical thinking, and in particular for a future in scientific research.

objectives

Graduates have attained the following general learning outcomes:

a. theoretical and practical skills in more than one specialist area

b. the ability to make an independent analysis of scientific problems, analysis of relevant specialist literature, formulate verifiable hypotheses, and set up and carry out research and critical reflection on one’s own research and that of others;

c. the ability to interrelate and integrate various areas of computer science, artificial intelligence, creative and performative arts with relevant aspects of philosophy, cognitive science, and linguistics;

d. the ability to present clearly, verbally as well as in writing, one’s own research results, and the ability to communicate with colleagues and to present their research results as a contribution to a congress or as (part of) a scientific publication;

e. sufficient understanding of the social and societal role of academia, especially computer science/artificial intelligence and the creative and performative arts, to be able to critically reflect upon it and in part consequently to come to an ethically sound attitude and corresponding execution of one’s professional duties;

f. have the learning skills to allow them to continue to study in a manner that may be largely self-directed or autonomous.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Graduates are trained in scientific research methods, creative development of ideas and products, working as an individual and within a team. The working perspectives are various. Some of our students aim at a scientific career, and strive to be a PhD student in Leiden or elsewhere. Graduates can pursue a doctorate. Other students will work in the fields of IT, arts, product design or communication. Some of them will be performers, teachers or consultants, some will run their own companies.
