A unique programme in which you further develop your knowledge in your scientific field in the first year and then learn to apply your science-based background to a business or policy question in your second year.

The Science, Management and Innovation Master’s specialisation allows you to apply your science background to a societal theme and enables you to make a difference in your future field of work. You graduate in your original Master’s discipline but are also taught how innovation is managed in companies, how policy is made in government, and discuss several approaches to today’s societal challenges.

You will improve your ability to cooperate with actors from other disciplines. This combination of science, policy and business, and the capability to work in multi-disciplinary teams is in high demand, not only in companies but also in non-profit organisations and the public sector. You will create a unique profile with your disciplinary background and combine this with one of the focus track areas related to the sustainable development goals. These are Health, Climate & Energy, Green Industries & IT, or Biodiversity.

Waarom aan de Radboud University Nijmegen?

Many organisations struggle with societal challenges when working towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health, climate and energy, industry and biodiversity. Addressing these challenges requires knowledge in the field of natural or computer sciences, but also from other disciplines, such as policy, management and innovation. Solutions for such challenges requires scientists with an analytical background as well as a business and societal understanding.

In Science, Management and Innovation (SMI) you will gain expertise in societal challenges, work on the Sustainable Development Goals and learn the ability to speak the language of policy and business.

  • A unique, two-year programme in which you first advance your knowledge in your scientific field and then apply it to a societal relevant business or policy question.
  • You will gain work experience outside of academia during your Master’s and develop skills including interviewing, oral presentation, cooperation and entrepreneurship, thus enhancing your job opportunities.
  • It is a great experience to work on joint projects and courses with students from various disciplines and backgrounds.
  • You create a unique profile by combining a widely recognised and highly regarded science disciplinary background with specialising in a societal science theme: Health, Climate & Energy, Industries & Green IT, or Biodiversity.

tracks

track Biodiversity

Biodiversity is rapidly declining worldwide. Reversing this decline is key in achieving the SDG's as biodiversity is at the heart of human well-being and life in water and life on land.

Therefore, biodiversity is (increasingly becoming) a point of focus for governments, organizations and companies. In this theme you will learn about biodiversity conservation and the various causes and effects of biodiversity change.

track Climate and Energy

Human interference with the climate system is deeply intertwined with our energy system. In this theme you will learn about climate science and the various causes and effects of climate change.

You will gain experience in analysing and modelling the energy system, and you will learn how to investigate options to mitigate climate change, whether via the transition to a more sustainable energy system or via the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in other sectors.

track Green Industries & IT

Industries generate a lot of physico-chemical data that contain the potential to make processes more economically viable and more sustainable.

Digital prediction models (Industry4.0) are essential to control the process for such gains in efficiency. Valuable industrial prediction models require understanding of the origin of the measurements, of the structure of the processes and of the ways in which new predictions may provide economic and environmental value. This SMI track provides the insight in these three aspects.

track Health

To reach good health and wellbeing, many challenges need to be faced by healthcare systems. In many parts of the world, health has been improving but new diseases threaten progress.

Moreover, new forms of organisation and modern IT developments are changing the face of the health sector. In this theme you will learn how to address various aspects of innovations, upcoming diseases, new pharmaceuticals, AI applications and personalized care.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Students who have done Science, Management and Innovation end up in a number of different positions. The specialisation is a good preparation for becoming a policy officer in a government ministry, an R&D manager or sales manager in a company or project manager in organisations such as TNO or ECN. Skills that you acquire also could prepare you for a career in consultancy companies, such as Accenture or McKinsey.
Career perspectives are excellent, in particular as the research project provides an entry point into a viable employer, and valuable work experience. Usually students find jobs for employers that are in some way connected to the area of their main Master's programme and/or to the theme they chose as their specialisation. For example, a Computer Science student who chose the theme Security may go to work for a bank or the police. And a Mathematics student who chose the theme Climate & Energy might go to work for an energy company or a national Ministry of the Environment. In other words, the options are endless.
