In this Master’s programme, you will study language and communication from various theoretical perspectives, including generative grammar, functional discourse grammar, optimality theory, neural networks, argumentation theory, rhetoric and discourse theory.

You will be taught to understand the value of these different theoretical approaches in analysing linguistic problems. The programme boasts an open, constructive atmosphere, in which you are trained to look beyond your own particular field of expertise.

This Research Master’s is coordinated by the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication (ACLC), the large and thriving linguistics community at the University of Amsterdam that will be your academic home during your studies.

Linguistics and Communication is a Research Master's programme that puts a strong focus on methodological issues and allows students to specialise in a wide range of linguistic sub-disciplines. The Research Master’s programme in Linguistics and Communication comprises 120 ECTS:

  • 36 ECTS for core courses;
  • 24 ECTS for electives;
  • 21 ECTS for tutorials and/or internships;
  • 9 ECTS for LOT school courses;
  • 30 ECTS for a Master’s thesis.

The Research Master's programme Linguistics and Communication provides an excellent foundation for students interested in conducting scientific research in any of the aforementioned fields, and is very successful in guiding students towards the PhD level. The programme also offers a sound basis for careers in the areas of clinical linguistics, curriculum development, language engineering, speech technology, language planning, artificial intelligence and teaching.

Our former graduates obtained:

  • PhD positions in the Netherlands and abroad;
  • research-related jobs that require soft skills such as dealing with changing knowledge and writing publishable reports (e.g. research advisor);
  • jobs in higher education and in the IT industry (e.g. data analyst);
  • jobs in the speech and language therapy sector (e.g. clinical linguist).
