And what makes a story worth reading?

Typical questions on which you develop a critical, sharp view during your studies in Literature and Society. Literature is a broad concept and varies from the first written texts to the last spoken word performance. As a student you are not just reading: of course, you love literature, but your interests are broader. You want to learn how stories shape us and how they can be linked to our contemporary challenges. You’re interested in culture and social issues and also enjoy writing yourself.

Within the bachelor's program in Literature and Society, you choose one of our 2 tracks, which, in addition to the language of instruction, also differ in focus:

    • Creatief Schrijven Nederlands
A study in literature and creative writing: the first Dutch bachelor's degree in creative writing, which gives you a scientific basis plus practical writing skills: creative writing. Main language in this track is Dutch.
    • Literature and Society
This bachelor's program teaches you to look at (written and visual) literature with a critical eye. Here too you will work on your writing skills, but the focus of the course is broader.

Almost all courses you take at the Literature and Society programme are offered as seminars. This means that there are about 15 to 25 students per seminar and it is expected that all participants prepare themselves and actively contribute to the discussion.

    objectives

Almost all students who graduate a Literature and Society programme go on to follow master's programmes – at VU Amsterdam, elsewhere in the Netherlands, or even abroad. The 'English Literature in a Visual Culture' master's programme at VU is the most popular, but some students choose to follow a more linguistics-focused master's degree, or two-year master's programme in education that leads to a job in teaching. Some students take a research master's and eventually a PhD position. There are plenty of possibilities.

Having completed bachelor's and master's degrees in literature, your writing skills will be top-notch, and your ability to think critically and ask challenging questions will be expertly honed. Plus, you will have the capacity to distill large amounts of complex information into well-structured, clear communications. These skills can be put to use in academia, the public sector, publishing houses, media, and more.

    Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Most of our students continue to pursue careers that allow them to think critically and challenge social norms. Within the academic world, our graduates become high-school teachers or university professors. In the literary world, they work in publishing houses, organise literary events, edit journals or in some other way contribute to the written word. Some students also become researchers for ministries or non-profit organisations.
