Applied Mathematics involves the development and application of mathematical tools to analyse and design the dynamical systems required by modern technology. Mathematical modelling of the problems encountered plays a fundamental role, followed by numerical analysis, computer simulation, and controller design to make the systems behave according to the desired specifications. Interaction with other disciplines and with specialists in the fields of application is essential.

During your two-year Master’s programme you will be embedded in the Applied Mathematics research group of your choice. You will be supervised by staff during your research project, which can also take the form of an internship, for example within a company’s research division.

Three specializations

  • Systems and Optimization
  • Computational Mathematics
  • Statistics and Data Science

Waarom aan de University of Groningen?

  • A connection between mathematical theory and real-life problems is what typifies the Applied Mathematics degree at Groningen
  • You can combine courses from both Mathematics and Applied Mathematics
  • Courses include related fields, such as Econometrics and Physics
  • We offer internship and research opportunities
  • On successful completion of this Master's degree programme, you will have a Master of Science (MSc.) diploma in Applied Mathematics (international title). In the Netherlands, you will also be entitled to use the title of ir (ingenieur)

FMF
The FMF is an association for the Bachelor's programmes Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Applied Physics, Physics, Astronomy and all of the subsequent Master's programmes at the University of Groningen.
The association pursues three objectives. The first objective is that it wants to contribute to the broadening of the scientific education of its members. This is done by organizing various activities in the scientific field, such as study excursions, lectures and symposiums.

I want to take part in research that contributes to the quest to better understand the world

My reason for studying maths is that I want to better understand the world. I really enjoy this about maths: all that you can see around you can be explained in a very clear manner by mathematics.

I certainly found my place in the Bachelor’s degree programme in Applied Mathematics, and found the hands-on, applied course units particularly interesting. My Bachelor’s project revolved around neuromorphic computing, in which we investigated a new approach to making a new supercomputer...
I am enjoying the course units and they connect well together, which makes it possible to take various learning pathways. You are also free to follow course units from other degree programmes. For example, I am now following a course unit from the degree programme in Industrial Engineering and Management. My interest mainly lies in electric circuits and the modelling of them. I hope to be able to pursue this topic in my Master’s thesis. After graduating, I want to continue in research, be it at the University or at a company like Astron, to take part in research that also contributes to the quest to better understand the world.

A Master's degree in Applied Mathematics opens up many job opportunities. During the Master's programme you will learn to think in a logical, systematic, and problem-oriented way within a multidisciplinary environment. When you have completed the programme, you will be able to apply mathematics to a technical problem and to work at the interface between theory and practice, skills that are highly valued by a wide variety of employers. You will find job opportunities in industrial companies, rese

Job opportunities are available in industrial companies, research institutes, as well as in universities. Examples of companies looking for applied mathematicians include Gasunie, Philips, Stork, Shell, Tata Steel, KPN and small engineering bureaus. Examples of research institutes are the National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR, the picture on these pages comes from the NLR), WL/Delft Hydraulics, KNMI and TNO.

You can start a university career by working as a PhD student, which means working for four years on a research project and writing a thesis. After having successfully defended this thesis, you will be awarded a PhD degree. Afterwards you can continue an academic career or start a career in industry.
